In preparation for tomorrow’s lab over radioactive decay, students completed the Radioactive Decay guided notes. This included differentiating the three types of radioactive decay (alpha, beta, and gamma) as well as defining the term “half-life”. We then worked through a half-life problem by recording the equation, an example, and a graph of the […]

For far too many, it is virtually absent.
Approximately 40-50% of students came to class without having completed the homework assignment that was given to them on Friday. This rate was as high as 60-70% in 2nd and 4th hours. This homework assignment was brief (only three problems - requiring a grand total 5-10 […]

Class started with a discussion of the complete directions for identifying the unknown contents of the mystery canister (a sealed film canister containing 10 pennies - an unknown percentage of which are “old” (pre-1982 copper) pennies. This was followed by directions for the Post Lab.
After the discussion, students tackled the final part of the lab: […]

Today we completed the first day of a two-day lab on isotopes. By using pennies to model different isotopes of an element, students completed several exercises aimed at a more thorough understanding of the term “weighted average mass”. Students worked in cooperative pairs to complete both sides of the Isotopes of Pennies Lab. Students will […]

Last week we learned about ions: atoms with differing numbers of protons and electrons. Today’s objective was to learn more about isotopes: atoms with differing numbers of protons and neutrons. After defining them, we then labeled a diagram of the Carbon Cycle. With this information, students were armed with the knowledge to complete a the […]

Today we continued where we left off yesterday with balancing chemical equations. We started class by working through several of the problems on the Balancing Equations homework assignment that was given yesterday. Students were allowed to make changes, corrections, and additions to their own page if it was incorrect or incomplete. With what time we […]

Today we revisited the Law of Conservation of Mass as a means of understanding why it is important that we balance chemical equations. We then worked through several examples together on the “Balancing Act” guided practice problem set. Students then had the remaining 10-15 minutes of class to make progress on the Balancing […]

After spending several class days (as well as an after-school study session attended by about 50 students Wednesday) preparing for this chemistry test, students got it out of the way today. The test is worth 50 points and will show up in PowerSchool by Monday AM.
Reminder: Class will not meet tomorrow due to the state […]

Preparing for tomorrow’s Chemistry Test was the focus of today’s class. Our primary resource was studying with the Chemistry Study Guide. Students worked to organize all of the paper resources listed on the guide and then tackled the 15 short answer questions on the back.
After school today (Wednesday: 3:15-4:00) is the chemistry test study session. […]
